The Trade Show Junkie Rides Again

Friday, March 30th, 2012

This year as you know we combined our two companies Goodtool and Goodson into one bigger company to focus on service to you, our valued customers. Goodtool has been the face of the brake shop service tools and supplies for 15 years and, of course, Goodson is the face for the professional engine builder tools and supplies. I like to say we’ve got you covered in the GO business with Goodson and the WHOA business with Goodtool. Now that they are one in the same we can pass on additional savings due our buying power for many of the brake service items you see in this year’s catalog.

It also takes Goodson to trade shows that it has never attended before. One of those trade shows is the Vision High Tech Training & Expo that happens every spring in Overland Park, Kansas. Now I’ve attended this show in the past, but this was the first year for Goodson to attend. I was surprised by how many attendees actually not only do the standard technician stuff like tune ups, brake jobs and various other high end repairs on today’s cars and truck, but also how many actually also do engine work. Yep valve jobs, short block assembly and clutch work.

Goodson-Goodtool Booth at the Vision Hi-Tech Training & Expo 2012This show is well attended due to the very high-end technical trading seminars they offer. I talked to people from as far away as Pennsylvania, Washington, Florida and California. They all commented that the seminars are the best in the USA. A lot of questions of why Goodson was there and how Goodson would fit into their market and when I explained the Go and Whoa deal they all said it just makes since to have combined the two companies.

Courtney Hansen signing autographs at the Vision Hi-Tech Training & ExpoI got a very special treat as on Friday night they had Courtney Hansen from Spike TV and she is the host of PowerBlock and Overhaulin’. You have probably seen a few spots on Horsepower TV with John Brochard showcasing some of our Goodson products when they are doing an engine build. Any way Courtney was there signing autographs and there was a lull in the booth action so I too waited in line to get my picture taken and get a couple of autographs from Courtney for a couple of my buddies. I gotta say this about Courtney, She is one of the nicest people I have ever gotten an autograph from. Not only is she gorgeous but she is quite knowledgeable as she grew up in a racing family. She also took the time to actually talk and joke with each and every person who waited in line to see her. I tip my hat to a celebrity who can take the time for her fans like Courtney did.

Over-all the show was as success and we will be back there again next year.

Until then ……………see you on the web!

Dave Monyhan

PS: Yes, I did get a lot of really cool stickers for my collection. HA!

More on Bill “Grumpy” Jenkins**

Friday, March 30th, 2012

**Legendary drag racer (and colorful local personality) Bill “Grumpy” Jenkins has died this morning.
He had gone back into the hospital on Sunday – has had some health problems over the last few years.
He will be sorely missed.
William Tyler “Grumpy” Jenkins (born 1930) is an engine builder and retired drag racer. Between 1965 and 1975 he won a total of thirteen NHRA drag races. Jenkins raced in the clutchless planetary gear transmission era. Most of these wins were won with a manually shifted four speed transmission. In 1972 he recorded 250 straight runs without missing a gear shift.

He was formally trained as a mechanical engineer at Cornell University, and he used his training and skills to build engines. He has been inducted in numerous motorsports halls of fame for his engine building skills in the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Pro Stock division.

His innovations include drag racing’s first kickout oil pans, Pro Stock strut-style front suspension, and dry sump oiling system, and cool cans, electric water pump fan, gas port pistons, and slick-shift manual transmissions. Considered the “Father of Pro Stock”, Jenkins-built engines were used to win five NHRA Pro Stock championships and three American Hot Rod Association (AHRA) championships.

He was nicknamed “Grumpy” for having a no-nonsense attitude at races. The Motorsports Hall of Fame of America said: “his continual search for improved performance left little time for idle chatter with his racing colleagues.”

Vegas Time!

Wednesday, March 28th, 2012

Hello Everyone,

It seems like it has been months since I last e-mailed everyone, and it seems like that long since we last ran our Kalitta Motorsports racecars! During the last couple of weekends off, everyone here at Kalitta Motorsports World Headquarters in Ypsilanti, MI, have been hard at work getting ready for our next race in Las Vegas, Nevada, this coming weekend. Counting Vegas, Team Kalitta will be racing four out of the next six weekends, and that means we need to be prepared and ready to do battle out on the track to insure that all of the Team Kalitta Nitro burners, make it into the Top 10.

Both the DHL and Patron Funny Car Teams have been hard at work, trying to make both of those cars as identical as possible. Connie, Del, Nicky, Jon O and myself, all agree that in order for the Kalitta Funny Car Teams to successful, they need to be as close to identical as possible. Having nearly identical cars is something that we planned to do at pre-season testing down in West Palm Beach this year, but as is normally the case, plans change, and you do what you need to do to get the cars down the track. It is a very hard and somewhat impossible task to make them 100% identical, but we all feel that we can get them to about 90 or 95% identical, and that would make it much easier for the DHL and Patron Teams to work and learn from each other, and thus be more successful.

In Kalitta Top Fuel World, Grubby and his team were busy changing over from the Rocky Boots colors that they ran in Gainesville, to Candlewood Suites colors for Vegas. Doug Dixon, Tom Gale and Nicole VonHiltmayer from IHG, made a visit to Kalitta Air and Kalitta Motorsports, a little over a week ago, and it was a great visit as they learned a little bit more about Kalitta Air and Kalitta Motorsports. The relationship that Kalitta Motorsports has with IHG, is a great relationship, and one that we are very proud of! Doug Kalitta and his team have been busy changing their Kalitta Air Dragster over to a Technicoat Dragster for the upcoming Vegas race. Cowboy Bob has been such a great friend and supporter of Kalitta Motorsports over the years, and we can’t thank him enough for stepping up and helping Doug and his team at the Vegas race. Doug will also fly the Technicoat colors at Houston, Denver and Sonoma as well. We also have some cool stuff in-store at the Dallas race and second Vegas race towards the end of the season, that Technicoat will also be involved in.

Last Wednesday, Rachel Brunner and I, took a trip down to Columbus, Ohio, so Rachel could check out her favorite college football team, the Ohio State Buckeyes…no just kidding…anyone who knows Rachel, knows that she is the biggest Michigan Wolverine fan on the planet! She will probably kill me for even joking about this, but it’s fun messing with her about the Buckeyes! For what it’s worth, I like the Wolverines as well! Back to our trip…both Rachel and I visited Mac Tools Headquarters and met with Mac Tools President, Brett Shaw, and Mr. Mac Tools himself…Tony Merrit. Both Brett and Tony were both very instrumental in getting the Mac Tools colors back on Doug’s ride, and the meeting we had was very positive! One of the highlights of the trip down to Columbus was the Rocky Blier signed Pittsburgh Steelers helmet that Brett and Tony gave me! To say I was surprised was an understatement! Thank you again Brett and Tony, and thank you Mac Tools for believing in Doug and Kalitta Motorsports!

Well, that’s all of the BS I can throw out this week, take care everyone and make sure you check us out on espn2 this weekend, cause I have a good feeling about Vegas!

This just in … PRI Announces Transition and Sale to SEMA

Tuesday, March 20th, 2012

The news release from PRI that follows just hit my in-box and I thought you’d be interested.  I just want to say I got to meet Steve Lewis at the very first PRI trade show back in 1988 in Louisville, KY. I congratulate him for creating a show that even today still attracts, tens-of-thousands of hard core racers and engine builders. Thank you Steve! Good luck in your endeavors and drop by your show once in a while to say hi! – Dave

  • John Kilroy, with 21 years experience at PRI as editor, associate publisher and vice president, continues to lead PRI.
  • SEMA plans to maintain hardcore racing identity and heritage of PRI Trade Show and PRI Magazine.
  • PRI founder Steve Lewis to focus on son’s racing career.

Performance Racing Industry (PRI), producers of the motorsports business magazine and trade show, finalized plans to be purchased by the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA). The transaction is set to close in late March 2012.

With 20-plus years of publishing and management experience at PRI, John Kilroy will serve as Vice President/General Manager of PRI and assume day-to-day operations for the group. All the operations, employees and offices will remain intact at PRI’s current location in Laguna Beach, California.

“Steve Lewis launched the PRI concept a quarter-of-a-century ago, as an organization totally dedicated solely to the racing industry,” said Kilroy. “It was Steve’s dream that PRI continue to serve the racing community, and to ‘nest’ PRI with an organization that clearly understands PRI’s heritage and the role we play in how the racing industry conducts business. We are pleased to have found that strategic partner in SEMA.”

Lewis, founder and current CEO of PRI, will now be able to dedicate his time and energy to pursue his lifelong passion for motorsports, which includes management of his Nine Racing midget team and supporting the racing career of his son Michael, 2011 Formula 3 Italia Rookie of the Year.

“We carefully considered all our options, and SEMA was the obvious choice to carry on the legacy of the PRI brand,” said Lewis. “SEMA is financially sound and has an experienced management team. They bring a long-term outlook to the table, as well as exceptional insight into the trade show business overall. I have no doubt that the PRI brand will continue to deliver value to the racing community, and I know John Kilroy and the current management group will keep the basic business themes that have been established as they continue to work out of the current location here in Laguna Beach that has housed the PRI family for all these years,” he said.

Many current and past SEMA Board of Directors have been involved with PRI through the years as exhibitors and advertisers and bring a keen understanding of how the two organizations complement each other.

“We’re very excited about the continuation of the great business offerings for the performance and racing community from this acquisition,” said Scooter Brothers, SEMA Chairman of the Board. “Having worked with the folks from PRI for many years, I know the show and magazine are appreciated and used by the racing industry to further their marketing efforts, and that racing entrepreneurs look upon the PRI Trade Show as a unique event and a valuable voice. The transition will preserve and protect that voice, and the show’s unique character and authenticity. We look forward to the PRI team carrying on the legacy and traditions of Steve Lewis.

“We also want to thank Steve Lewis for all he’s done for the racing industry, and for creating PRI,” added Brothers. “PRI Magazine and the PRI Trade Show have played a key role in the growth of the racing industry over the past 25 years, and we look forward to its continued success.”

SEMA President Chris Kersting said, “The Performance Racing Industry Trade Show and magazine are great complements to the SEMA mission: they help their customers’ businesses to succeed. SEMA looks forward to providing the PRI team the resources and support to continue delivering great value to the racing and performance segment.”

Founded in 1963, the SEMA trade association provides services and resources to businesses in the automotive specialty equipment industry. Members include manufacturers, distributors, retailers and marketers of products that enhance the styling and functionality of cars, trucks and SUVs. In addition to producing the premier automotive accessories trade show, where more than 100,000 individuals come to do business, SEMA offers education, research and several publications specifically targeted to the industry. The association also represents its members with a legislative advocacy group.

The 25th Annual Performance Racing Industry Trade Show takes place November 29 – December 1, 2012, in the North/South Building of the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida. It features exhibits by 1,100 racing companies in 3,100 booths, requiring 700,000 square feet to house the event. 38,000 buyers will attend from across the US, and 72 countries.

Subject: Gainesville Update

Thursday, March 15th, 2012

Hello Everyone,

I hope all of you are doing well and you have adapted to the time change that happened over the weekend! I don’t know about all of you, but this time change of moving the clocks forward takes me forever to get used to, and I feel like I am way behind on my beauty sleep, which I need lots of! You would think that with all of the traveling to different time zones that we do, it wouldn’t be such a big deal, but for some reason it is! Ok, enough whining out of me about sleep!

Going into Gainesville, we tried to use our past experiences there to help us with this years race. The last two years that we have raced Doug’s car at the Gainesville track, we always seemed to be way over center with either our clutch setup, our engine setup, or both. So this year, I decided that we would start out on the conservative side with Doug’s car since that’s where we always ended up. Once we finished up with qualifying, it was quite evident that we needed to be way more aggressive with our tuneup than we thought. The good news was that we qualified for a pretty tough show with a 3.89, but the bad news was that we ended up qualified in the number 13 spot, and had to race number 4 qualifier Brandon Bernstein in the first round.

Now while I was being conservative with Doug’s car, the same can’t be said for Connie and Grubby, which I know comes as a surprise to all of you. With Grubby flying the cool new Rocky Boots colors on his ride, Grubby ran a real nice 3.84 run on Saturday, which put the Rocky car in the number 10 spot. The interesting part was that the Rocky Boots car was running very well on that run, until the barrel valve on the car broke a bracket, which caused the Rocky Boots car to start losing fuel volume, which led to the burst panels blowing out. The best Connie and Grubby can figure, was that the Rocky car was probably going to run about a 3.82. No matter what, Grubby and the Rocky Boots dragster where racing on raceday, but had a first round matchup with points leader Antron Brown.

In Kalitta Funny Car world, Alexis DeJoria and her Tequila Patron Toyota, rebounded nicely from their Phoenix DNQ, by making three very nice and consistent runs with the freshly painted Toyota Camry. After dropping a cylinder on the first qualifying attempt, Alexis ran back to back 4.17′s and then on her last qualifying attempt, the Tequila Patron Toyota ran a very nice 4.12 @ 306 mph, which put Alexis in the number 10 spot for raceday. For Alexis’ first round matchup, she would have to go up against 15 time Funny Car Champ, John Force. Now wouldn’t it be cool for Alexis to get her first Nitro Funny Car round win against a guy like John Force? Stay tuned for that answer!

After spending a day down at DHL Americas Headquarters in Plantation, Florida, the DHL Team headed back north to Gainesville, hoping to make some good runs with the DHL Toyota. After spinning the tires on the first run, Jeff and the DHL Toyota ran a nice 4.15, and then on Saturday, followed that up with a 4.16. While the DHL Team was happy with a couple of good safe runs, Jon O and Nicky felt they left a lot on the table. Since Jeff ended up qualifying in the 13th spot, he would have to race Mike Neff, who ran very well during qualifying, which meant nothing could be left on the table!

On Race Day, Doug was the first Team Kalitta car out, and had a big matchup with Brandon Bernstein. At the start, Doug had an excellent reaction time in his Kalitta Air Dragster, and never looked back, running a piston hurting 3.85 @ 313, to beat Brandon’s 3.85. Grubby rolled up a few pairs later in the Rocky Boots dragster, looking to take out points leader Antron Brown. Grubby grabbed the quick lead with a better reaction time than Antron, but at about 200 feet, the Rocky Boots dragster began to lose traction. With that loss of traction, Antron got the win.

Jeff and his DHL Toyota Team had a huge race against points leader Mike Neff, who had run about as good during qualifying as you possibly could. Everyone on the DHL Team knew they need to be on their game if they had a chance of taking out Mike Neff. At the start, Jeff had a nice holeshot on Neff, and held that advantage for about 300 feet, that’s when Neff drove around the DHL Toyota and took the win. Jeff and the boys ran a pretty nice 4.14 @ 311, but it just wasn’t enough against Mike Neff’s 4.07 @ 310. The good news was that Jeff stayed in the Top 10 and even moved up a spot to 8th.

Alexis and her Tequila Patron Funny Car had a huge first round race with John Force, and if Alexis wanted to get her first elimination round win in a nitro funny car, she was going to have to beat the winingest driver in NHRA history to do it. At the start, John Force grabbed the quick lead, but at about 300 feet, Force began to lose traction! With that loss of traction, Alexis and her Del Worsham tuned Toyota, took advantage, and ran a very nice 4.11 @ 309. What a great way for Alexis to get her first round win in nitro funny car, beating the 15 time champ! Alexis was now off to the second round for the first time in 2012!

In the second round, Doug and his Kalitta Air Team, had an important race against Clay Millican, who has been running very well in 2012. Before the second round, we found a problem with the fuel nozzels in the number four cylinder in Doug’s ride. On the last qualifying run, and in first round, the number four piston took a pretty good beating, which robbed horsepower from the Kalitta Air dragster. With the problem fixed…hopefully…Doug and the Kalitta Air Team were ready to take out Millican. At the start, Doug had another great reaction time, and it appeared that the Kalitta Air dragster was running on all 8 cylinders! As Doug crossed the finish line, the winlight lit, and a 3.81 @ 320 popped up on the scoreboard, to say we were pretty happy was an understatement! For the first time in a long time, Doug was going to the semi-finals!

With Doug making it to the semi-finals, our hope was that Alexis would do the same. Alexis was now up against Jack Beckman, who had been running very well, but Del and the Tequila boys and girls, felt they could take out Fast Jack. At the start, Beckman grabbed the lead, but the Tequila Patron Toyota did its best to run Jack down. At the finish line, Beckman got the win, by running a very good 4.05 @ 314, to Alexis’s 4.13 @ 309. It was a good weekend for Alexis and her team, as they made five runs in a row, with elapsed times between a 4.11 and 4.17.

Before Doug’s semifinal race against Morgan Lucas, the rain started to fall on the Gianesville track. Of course it was one of those annoying light rains that never seem to end. After trying to dry the track a few times, the NHRA postponed the race until Monday morning at 10am. With the track being as good as it was on Sunday, Doug and his Kalitta Air Team knew they need a great run if they were to get around Morgan Lucas, who had run a great 3.74 in the previous round. When the light turned green, Lucas grabbed the quick lead, and kept it the whole way down the track by running another great 3.74 to beat Doug’s 3.78. Even though we didn’t get the win, we were pretty happy with that 3.78, and we felt we left quite a bit on the table. I feel that when we get back to conditions like that again, the Kalitta Air Team will be able to run very well! With the semi-final round showing, Doug moved up to the number seven spot in points.

Since we seem to like to abuse ourselves a little to much around here, we decided that we would test both funny cars after the race was over on Monday. At about 2pm, we started making some laps in both Jeff’s DHL Toyota, and Alexis’ Tequila Patron Toyota, trying a new clutch combination. We had some pretty good results, with Alexis running a best of a 4.14, shutting off early. Testing is always good when you can get some positive results!

Ok…having to write/type about four cars is wearing my fingers and my pea sized brain out, so I will stop now! I hope all of you have a great weekend and have a Happy St. Patrick’s Day, remember to wear something green! I will type at you before our next race in Las Vegas in a couple of weeks. Take care!

Racing In The Sunshine State!

Friday, March 9th, 2012

Hello Everyone,

I hope all of you have enjoyed a great week thus far and have some great plans in store for the coming weekend! Racing in March usually means one thing, the Gatornationals in Gainesville, Florida! I personally look forward to the Gatornationals, as it was my first official race with the Kalitta family way back in 1988. I remember flying into the Gainesville Airport, and Scott Kalitta coming to pick me up, and within an hour, Scott borrowed $200.00 from me, I don’t think he ever payed me back lol! Oh well, I remember that race like it was yesterday, and then when I think of everything that has happened since then, I shake my head in pure amazement!

We started off our Gainesville week with a very cool display down at DHL Americas Home Office in Plantation, Florida. Reg Kenney, who is the President of Global Engineering and Manufacturing for DHL Americas, is a huge supporter of the DHL Toyota Funny Car Team and Kalitta Motorsports. Reg wanted to show off the DHL Funny Car Team to all of the great employees at the Plantation offices, and let them know how DHL and Kalitta Air work together to make this racing program work. Christine Nashick and Michelle DelValle, who run the DHL Americas Marketing Department, were also very instrumental in making this a great display and getting the word out to all of the DHL Employees, thank you Christine and Michelle! I attached a few pictures from the display, one of the pictures is from the lobby of the DHL Offices, and it was a wall display that changed pictures every 5 seconds, with some great shots of the DHL car and team. Very cool!

By now, most of you know about Mac Tools coming back on board with Doug Kalitta’s team, starting at the Mac Tools US Nationals. Doug and some of the guys from his team, made their way down to Nashville, Tennessee, a couple of weekends ago, to announce the new sponsorship of Doug’s car, in front of thousands of Mac Tools Distributors and their families at the annual Mac Tools Fair. Since I had a prior commitment, I was not able to attend this years Tool Fair, but I got plenty of pictures from my friends, letting me know how much they missed me…at least I think they missed me! Most of the pictures I received were of Pittsburgh Steeler Hall Of Fame running back, Rocky Blier, who was there as a guest Motivational Speaker for Mac Tools. The best picture came from Custom Car Guru, Chip Foose, who sent me a picture of him standing with Rocky Blier, and to top it off, wearing all four of Rocky’s Super Bowl Rings! Now I am not smart enough to figure out how to get that picture off of my phone and attach it to this e-mail, but if you want to see that picture, you will have to come to the track!

Back to the race in Gainesville, Grubby will be running the Rocky Boots colors this weekend, and I think everyone will really like the new design that the folks at Rocky Boots came up with. We really are very thankful for the relationship we have with Rocky Boots, and look forward to running their colors when we get the chance. It is also cool that we were finally able to put a nice paint job on Alexis’ Tequila Patron Toyota Funny Car. We received the body back from SD Enterprises on Monday, and let me tell you, Stevie D and his crew did an awesome job!

With all of the time off we have had before Gainesville, it gave all of the Kalitta Teams, time to catch up and make sure we are fully prepared for the Gainesville race. Del Worsham made his way back to Michigan for a week, and went over the Tequila Patron Toyota from front to back, and is ready to make some great runs in Gainesville. I am confident that Alexis, Del and the Patron Team are going to have a great weekend in Gainesville! I have that same confidence about all of Team Kalitta’s hotrods this weekend!

Well that’s all from me right now, take care and I hope all of you have a great week and an even better weekend!

IT’S ANCHORS AWEIGH, AS WILK SAILS INTO GAINESVILLE

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (March 6, 2012) — Tim Wilkerson began the year on a promising note, advancing to the quarterfinals at Pomona by setting low e.t. in round one. He then took his Levi, Ray & Shoup Shelby Mustang to Phoenix the following weekend, where he was unintentionally able to change his flight home to a Sunday departure, after suffering an unfortunate DNQ in the desert. This weekend, at the Tire Kingdom Gatornationals in Gainesville, he’ll arrive incognito and hope that his nautically themed special-edition Ford can propel him forward at flank speed.

Running a one-race-only design, with primary sponsorship from longtime associate backer Diversified Yacht Services (based in Fort Myers) Wilk will not only be taking to the track in a car most won’t immediately recognize, he’ll also be racing on the famed Gainesville strip with a brand new Mustang body. The new 2012 Ford will make its debut at the Gators, clad in a design that features seawater and yachts.

“You’re never going to have a lighter body than a brand new one, and this one doesn’t even have a coat of paint on it, just the vinyl,” Wilk said. “When we planned this, we plotted it out with the delivery schedule for this new body and decided to haul it around with us to California and Arizona as our back-up body, even though it was raw carbon fiber. Lucky for us, we didn’t have to use it out there, so when we got back home it went right to Canham Graphics and got the vinyl installed.

“It’s probably unlike any design fans have ever seen, the way it was conceived by the Canham guys, so everyone should enjoy looking at it, but from inside the car I can’t see the design so all that matters to me is that it’s a lot lighter than the body we were just running. If we can dial our consistency back in, and make some nice clean runs, this body ought to help us run a little quicker. That’s the goal.”

The Diversified Yacht Services (DYS) special-edition body came about through Levi, Ray & Shoup, as LRS President Dick Levi also owns DYS. Wilk was more than willing to step up at the Gainesville race to give a boost of promotion to DYS as they prepare to open a new 60,000-foot marina with a massive 150-ton travel lift.

“We’d all happily do anything Dick wanted, in terms of how the car looks, how we look, or anything else, because I think he’s the greatest sponsor in the sport,” Wilkerson said. “The Florida tie-in, with DYS, has meant we’ve hosted a lot of their clients and employees at the Gatornationals, and this year we’ll make that extra-special with the DYS body. The bottom line is, we want to run well for all those folks. If we could get this Ford into the Winner’s Circle, we’d have to have someone blow that funny whistle and then we could give all the DYS people permission to come aboard, to join us for photos. That would be some big fun for everyone.”

On Friday afternoon in Gainesville, it will be time to weigh anchor and push off, to begin qualifying. Wilk hopes his ship will come in, well up in the field.
